Why I have picked my song - Week 4 work

'Paper Planes' - M.I.A

 The song 'Paper Planes' by M.I.A is a protest song that the artist is presenting her ideas on how darker-skinned immigrants are stereotyped in the West. M.I.A is singing about her own experiences as an English-Sri Lankan musician. This song expresses views on the generalisations, stereotypes and prejudices that immigrants still have to face regularly. I have picked this track for my music video due to how I believe that the protest about the ideologies that society have on immigrants is not expressed as much as it should be. This is not something that I have experienced myself, however I do feel a sense of injustice that a lot of people seem to perceive foreigners as a 'threat' to their own country. The protest song is an attempt to shift the negative wide-spread views of refugees as being prone to violence or laziness and I do believe it is still a very relevant topic that should be addressed regularly so I would like to make a protest music video with this track to express my views too.

FINAL EXPLANATION OF VIDEO - (statement of intent)

My objective for the music video I have created is ultimately to raise awareness for the struggles that immigrants / refugees / foreigners / those of an ethnic minority may experience when arriving to not only the UK, but anywhere where they may feel excluded. This is a protest for an issue that is not widely spoken about which is why it is so important to make it relevant, especially in these uncertain times when we should all be supporting each other. Firstly, the main character is clearly the artist herself who comes from Eastern Europe and is arriving to the UK (London) and is in search of a new life, or opportunity. However, when she arrives to the UK, things become a lot less exciting and she starts to feel out of touch. This is signified by her attempt to find a job and she is instantly rejected, followed by her struggles with money.   - My production studio name will be 'Taylored Productions' as a way of using my personal surname and interweaving it with the word 'tailored' to convey this idea of premium music that is tailored for it's audience. - The bold sans-serif font has been chosen to set a strong, premium tone and help reinforce the brand image. - The simplistic image connotes a youthful attitude that the brand is in touch with, bearing in mind the target audience of young 16-20 year olds. - This is a universal musical image that can be recognised across most ages, however the simplistic design that is similar to the logo of Apple iTunes is something that a socially-conscious 16-20 year old would be in tune with.
