Storyboarding Rough
1. Establishing shot of main location being central London. The mise-en-scene consists of key landmarks and iconic signifiers of London. The mood should be positive and opportunistic, and should illustrate the busy nature of London. Shot duration: 3 seconds (lasting as long as the first beat of the song).
2. Wide shot of another key signifier being the Tower of London. This is to further set the scene and make it clear where the first location is set. Daylight hours, blue skies and bright lighting should be included in the shot to ensure the mise-en-scene is colourful. Shot duration: 2 seconds (lasting as long as the second beat of the song).
3. Mid-shot of main artist up against a colourful wall filled with graffiti. This is to introduce the artist, dressed in quirky clothing of patterned trousers to convey her confidence. The mise-en-scene further continues with positive, colourful scenery to set the mood. Shot duration: 2 seconds
4. Mid-shot of main artist in the same background, however her expression on her face is now laughing/smiling to signify the artists confidence and positive nature. Shot duration: 1 second
5. In line with the intertextual reference of the movie 'Paddington', this will be a mid-shot of my artist arriving in Paddington Station in the same position from this scene in the original movie. The artist will have luggage with them to signify their arrival to London - with an added lip syncing performance element. This should be recognisable to the audience as a reference to the film. Shot duration: 5 seconds
5. This will be another intertextual reference to the film Paddington with a below the eye-level mid-shot of the artist travelling down an escalator whilst lip syncing to the song. The artist should be wearing a red hat as a further reference to the film and to signify the character in action. The mise-en-scene should display the tube station name of Paddington at the top. Shot duration: 5 seconds
6. Long-shot of the artist walking through the streets of London, lip-syncing to the lyrics. The mise-en-scene should include just the artist with no other people visible as it should be clear that the subject is exploring some of the quieter areas of London. Shot duration: 6 seconds
7. Mid-shot of artist further lip syncing to the song, in the same background as before. Even though this shot displays rural scenery, the mise-en-scene should display a backroad in London. Shot duration: 3 seconds.
8. In this mid-shot, the artist is walking into a crowd of people and all of which are wearing masks to make it relevant to the time period. The artist should be visibly out of place without a mask on in the centre of the crowd. This should begin to foreshadow how the artist is treated throughout the video. Shot duration: 5 seconds
9. Further to the shot before, the camera should move to a birds eye view of the crowd clearly avoiding the main artist. The subject will be placed centrally so that she is obvious to the audience and should be clearly distanced from others around her. A slight sense of hostility should be evident by this point, creating a shift of tone. Shot duration: 5 seconds
10. This close-up shot will be of the artist lip-syncing to the music - her emotion is beginning to become less confident. This close-up shot should evoke a sense of isolation as her surrounding are not so visible. Shot duration: 5 seconds
11. This wide shot, should display the back of the artist sitting in front of a panel of interviewees. it would be clear that the artist is in a job interview and the camera angle should evoke a sense of vulnerability. Shot duration: 3 seconds
12. In this mid-shot, the camera should now be facing the artist being interviewed and no lip-syncing should be evident here - just obvious conversation between the group. The camera should include the back of the interviewers sitting opposite the artist. Shot duration: 3 seconds
13. This mid-shot should now display the artist sitting down, reading a letter in clear disappointment. It should be clear here that she was not successful in getting the job she was interviewed for previously. The emotion should be of clear disappointment with low lighting to surround the artist. Shot duration: 3 seconds
14. Extreme close-up shot of the artist lip syncing to the music, further reinforcing this sense of isolation and unawareness of her surroundings. Shot duration: 2 seconds
15. This wide-shot should display the back of the artist sitting at a bus stop, alone during the night. The mood has plummeted with the use of low-key lighting and obscure surroundings. The artist should be made to seem purely alone. Shot duration: 4 seconds
16. Mid-shot displaying the artist sitting on a bus lip syncing to the music with a dull expression on their face. Members of the public are seen sitting away from the artist and have clearly avoided sitting in her area. The white lighting of the bus should create a cold setting to the mise-en-scene further adding to the lone feeling. Shot duration: 10 seconds
17. Close-up shot displaying an empty wallet opened by the artist, signifying that she now has very limited financial resources. The audience should infer that this is as a result of being a foreigner and the limitations this may come with such as being unable to secure a job. Mise-en-scene is limited with the main focus on the wallet, however the artists outfit may be present to signify who is in the shot. Shot duration: 3 seconds
18. Close-up of artist lip syncing in a skate park: the significance of the skate park and the graffiti that is visible is to highlight some of the stereotypes of refugees or immigrants as being a danger or a tarnish to a particular country that they arrive to. Graffiti is a typical method of protesting too and so it links into the concept of a 'protest music video'. Mine-en-scene is day light with just the artist in sight with the background visible. Shot duration: 8 seconds
19. Establishing shot of central London once again: below the eye-level to suggest that the shot is from the artists point of view - this is in order to convey a sense of vulnerability of the artist in such a large city. The mise-en-scene is a cloudy day, with cold lighting (editing will be used to ensure the saturation is not high): this is all in order to present London in a negative light and a place that is not so exciting and as opportunistic as it was presented at the beginning of the video. Shot duration: 5 seconds
20. The next few shots are meant to be mid shots of various people all lip syncing to the music in the same position (these people may be of ethnic minority ideally to highlight the people that may be stereotyped but also a range of demographics to convey this idea that they are all unique in their own way). Fast paced cuts of each person (beginning and ending with the main artist) meaning the shot duration is around: 1 second per person.
21. This long-shot will display the artist from the back, walking away from the camera as the music fades out. The mise-en-scene is of a long pathway to metaphorically signify the long journey ahead of the artist. The ending should be open-ended to the audience as there has not been a conventional 'resolution' to the story. The problem with immigrants/refugees coming to this country and being unable to live a 'normal' life due to the way they look/speak is still hugely prominent and so this is ending is open to interpretation of the audience, hopefully evoking a need to reflect on the video. Shot duration: 5 seconds
*an additional idea is filming the artist going into numerous shops looking for a job and being rejected
